It’s that time of year again. That time when the cold gets deep in your bones, your skin gets dry and flaky and your lips get chapped into oblivion. ‘Tis but a merry season! I can deal with the general dryness in my skin, but my lips get so chapped sometimes that it can be quite painful. I don’t think I’m alone in this issue either. You guys have trouble with it too right? In an attempt to put an end to this business, I’ve put four lip balms through the ringer.

Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment
I remember people going nuts for these balms a few years ago. I’ve owned various colours over the years and, while they’re certainly nice for a hydrating lip tint, if you’re looking for intensive restoration I don’t think this is your man. I’ve even tried the advanced lip therapy version and it wasn’t anything special to me. They don’t stay on particularly long and they don’t feel like anything remarkable. I think you can get better balms for a fiver (Nova Scotia Fisherman Lip Balm).

Bite Agave Lip Balm
These only just launched, but they’ve been flying off the shelves. The ingredient list is great – lanolin, shea butter and a lovely blend of oils – and, as it’s Bite Beauty, it’s free of any nasty chemicals. The balm is really hydrating and lasts well on the lips. I can see some not liking it however, simply because the consistency is so stiff that it’s a bit of a pain to get on. I would definitely give this a thumbs up, however I don’t think it’s the best out there.

Nuxe Reve De Miel
What a beautiful formula. This lip balm has because something of a cult classic and I can tell you that it’s well deserved! The texture is thick and creamy and the smell it divine. You can pop it on your lips at night and when you wake up in the morning you can still feel it on your lips. It’s deeply hydrating and a true, luxurious treat to use.

Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm
Up until a couple of months ago I would have told you that it’s not possible to make a better balm that Reve De Miel. But my friend/roommate (who has the largest collection of lip balms I’ve ever seen in my life) kept telling me I needed to try Jack Black’s Lip Balm. I finally did and, let me tell you, I bow down to her superior knowledge. The balm is the shit. It’s a lot more of a fluid texture than I’m used to, which I initially assumed meant that it wouldn’t last. But it actually lasts extremely well. Not only does it leave my lips feeling more hydrated than anything else I’ve tried, it also leaves them incredibly plump, supple and smooth. I can’t recommend this enough and it’s the most affordable of the bunch.

  • Ooh the Jack Black balm sounds like a game-changer! Thank you for sharing, I am always looking for a new balm xxx

    • Ah yes, the eternal hunt for the ultimate lip balm.

  • I remember hearing great things about the Jack Black one aages ago! I’m not sure where I can get it here but I’ll have to keep an eye out! I fricken love the original Bite Agave lip mask. That totally saved my lips when I was in Colorado in Winter! I have to say I’m actually not the biggest fan of Reve de Miel! For some reason it just sat grossly on my lips and the morning after I would have to scrub it off because it left a layer of gunk on my lips… ?

    • Yes. I think you’d like the Jack Black if you didn’t like the Nuxe. They’re very different in consistency. I know what you mean about the Nuxe kind of leaving this layer, the Jack Black doesn’t do that at all.

  • I’m pretty sure I have a Jack Black lip balm in my “to try” pile and now I’m wondering why the heck I haven’t used it yet!!

    • hahaha fish it out.

  • The Nuxe balm is my absolute fave, I adore it! x

    • It’s a beauty for sure!

  • I’ve been dedicated to the Jack Black Balm for years now- it’s the only thing that sorts out my super dry lips (they used to split they’d get so dry) .
Fresh is nice for a tinted balm, but certainly not worth the price tag in my opinion.
Sadly, Bites lip products give me a horrible allergic reaction, which previously I’ve never had with any other balm. Since then I’ve actually found tons of people online and In person that had the exact same reaction, but I can put my thumb on WHAT they use that does it 🙁

    • Crazy. I wonder if it’s the lanolin. Can you use other Bite products? Because I don’t think there’s lanolin in anything else, but I could be wrong.
I’m glad you like the Jack Black one too! Are there any other fantastic ones you’ve come across or do you just stick to that?

      • The Matte lip Crayons make me react too. In fact I wore one for a couple hours to test, and that alone was enough to make my lips break out in tiny blisters! I’ve been too scared to try anything since.

I actually like the Bioderma Balm as well, it stays on nicely overnight. I used to love Dior Creme de Rose but would go through it lightening fast.

  • Obsessed with the bite agave lip mask and now the balm. They really lock in moisture.

    Perfect Shade of Mauve

    • Yeah they’re super intense and thick.

  • I’m glad I’m not the only one who found Fresh lacking. It’s good but doesn’t add that much hydration as people hyped it out to be. Still lovely, though.

    Selene Addicted

    • I do love the smell I have to say. Fresh is always good at producing an appealing vibe, but it was a bit lacking in the hydration department.

  • I’m definitely adding the Bite Agave Lip Balm and Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm to my wishlist! Lovely picks!
